Childhood Alopecia & Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

September is a very important month for Monique’s Salon. It is Childhood Alopecia AND Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Each September, all of us at Monique’s Salon do a month long fundraiser to help raise awareness for all of our local children that are suffering from any form of hair loss. Our goal is to raise $10,000 and to receive 300 hair donations. With those goals met, we can help at least 10 children in our local community. Each wig or hairpiece takes 15-30 hair donations and $1000-$3000 to make. On average right now, Monique’s Salon is creating 1 wig/hairpiece per week and all of the children are from our local area. In 2008, Monique’s Salon created 48 wigs/hair pieces for children in the Spokane/CDA area. With 2 million children in the U.S. suffering from Alopecia, 46 children daily being diagnosed with cancer and cancer being the #1 disease resulting in death for children, our kids need all of our help. Monique’s has joined with a newly formed Spokane based Non-Profit that helps our local children in the time of need!

 

 

Treasured Locks for Children is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the Pacific Northwest under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. We meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. The majority of the children that are helped by TLC have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, childhood cancer treatments, trichotillomania, and many other medical reasons.

The Sixth Annual Pumpkin Ball will be held Saturday October 24, 2009, at the Spokane Convention Center.

For the past five years, The Pumpkin Ball has delivered on its promise to help children served by Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital and Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery. Last year this black-tie gala attracted close to 600 health care, community and business leaders, and raised more than $180,000, after expenses, to benefit our region’s youngest and most vulnerable citizens.
